Our coaches have a complete understanding of the fundamental skills required to be a successful debater, from research to persuasion to case and file construction. What sets them apart is their familiarity with debate as a global activity. All of our coaches have worked across linguistic and cultural contexts and have deep familiarity with diverse subject areas.
Evan Streams has been coaching debate for ten years. In that time his students have won more than two hundred awards in multiple leagues and styles, including most recently winning the Tournament of Champions and the New York state championship. Less recently, his students have been finalists at the Chinese national championship, and winners of the Connecticut state championship. As a debater, he has won awards in parliamentary, extemporaneous, and policy debate, and was the Connecticut's state champion. He currently coaches at the Dalton School and studies at Columbia University.
Alexander has accumulated nearly a decade of speech and debate experience. For 7 years in the United States he was an active member of his high school and university’s speech and debate team. During that period he won numerous awards including being the Top Speaker at IPDA Debate Nationals. He has coached students from around the world. For two years he coached high school speech and debate in the United States where his students went on to win numerous gold medals at the state championship competition. He also worked as a debate instructor at Keystone Academy in Beijing where his students were ranked among the top competitors in mainland China. As an online speech and debate coach, he has taught students from the United States, mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, and India. He has his Master’s in International Relations from Peking University and his Bachelor’s in Political Science from Portland State University. Outside of private tutoring, he works as a university lecturer specializing in international studies.
Christian Quiroz currently works as a debate coach online and in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey, and has competed and coached debate for 11 years. Competitively, he reached the semifinals round of the Tournament of Champions and was awarded top speaker. In college, he made it to elimination rounds at top tournaments such as Wake and the California swings. He also attended the NDT his freshman and senior year. He is also an experienced coach; his debate students have made finals appearances at Harvard, Glenbrooks, and the Bronx invitational. He graduated from Rutgers University-Newark with a bachelors in philosophy, which he now uses to teach his students about various aspects of philosophy.

Carolyn Ky is a rising sophomore at Stanford University. She hopes to major in Economics with a minor in History. She has competed and coached debate for over a year. Competitively, she reached third place at the Washington State tournament and qualified to Nationals three years in a row. She competed on the national circuit and broke at half the bid tournaments she competed at. She also started her own middle school debate team. This summer, she is a strategy consultant intern at Artemis Connection and previously interned as a data analyst intern in Boeing's Core Quality division.
Ryan Hund is a second-year graduate student at the University of Southern California who has competed and coached debate for 11 years. Competitively, he reached the semifinal round of the Parliamentary Debate Tournament of Champions and has qualified to NSDA Nationals in public forum debate. He has also won numerous individual and team awards in public forum, British Parliamentary, and parliamentary debate. He is also an experienced coach; his students have been champions and finalists at the international division of the Stanford Invitational and have advanced to late elimination rounds at numerous national circuit tournaments. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in Urban Planning and expects to graduate in May 2021.

Belén Mella graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University. She concentrated in Social Studies, a major that encompasses politics, philosophy, and economics. Her thesis was awarded the Science, Technology, and Society Undergraduate Essay Prize.
She has extensive coaching experience, working at the National High School Debate League of China, the Horace Mann School in New York, various debate camps in the United States, and the Harvard Association Cultivating Inter-American Democracy across Latin America.
Belén competed in Public Forum for Miami Beach Senior High. As a high school senior, she championed the Emory Barkley Forum and the Florida State Championship tournaments. Additionally, Belén reached finals at the National Catholic Forensic League Tournament, semifinals at Florida Blue Key, and quarterfinals at Glenbrooks, Nova Titan, and the Tournament of Champions. She was ranked fourth in the United States and reached late out rounds at the 2014 NSDA Nationals.

Theo Stapleton is a masters student at Oxford University, and has been involved with debating for over 10 years. During high school he captained the Western Australian Schools Debating team and was selected in the Australia A Debating Team in his final year. At University Theo ranked as 5th Best novice at the Australian Inter-Varsity Debating Championships in 2014, and represented UWA at the World Debating Championships and Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships in 2014. He has since coached the Western Australian Debating team, and has significant judging and coaching experience in Australia, China, and other countries. He is currently studying contemporary China studies, and has a background in Philosophy.
Tim Lewis is a history teacher at the Kurt Hahn Expeditionary Learning School in New York City and a coach at the New York City Urban Debate League.
He has coached several successful teams, including the 2015 NHSDLC national champions, the finalists in the International Division of the 2015 Harvard Invitational, and the 2017 Connecticut State Champions. He has worked with hundreds of students in the National High School Debate League of China, the Connecticut Debate Association, and the Boston Debate League.
He co-edited the first edition of the official NHSDLC textbook, Speak Up, and has worked at numerous debate camps and clinics. Outside of debate, Tim has also coached award winners in Model UN and drama, and enjoys teaching improvisational comedy. He is based in Brooklyn.
US Economic Policy
Matthew debated public forum for four years at the Nueva High School in San Mateo, California. As a member of the first graduating class of his high school, Matt played a large role in founding and establishing the debate team at Nueva. Some of his most notable accomplishments include championing the Tournament of Champions (2017), the ASU Invitational (2017), and the Bronx Science Tournament (2015). Matt also competed in APDA style college debate in 2018. Now, Matt studies political science, math, and economics at Swarthmore college.
Progressive Arguments in Public Forum
Rafey Khan closed out his illustrious four-year debate career at Nova High School by winning the 2017 NSDA National Championship in Public Forum. He also made the finals of Florida Blue Key and the Florida State Championship, and made multiple out round appearances in other esteemed tournaments.
Besides obtaining trophies and speaker awards, Rafey has committed himself to increase inclusivity within the debate community by coaching at camps that serve students in underrepresented urban areas. He has also been the face of his local county in multiple events that foster the growth of debate, such as the Broward County EdTalk 2016.
Rafey is currently a freshman at Emory University, where he is majoring in Biology.
US Racial Justice
Jianxiong Zhang is an NHSDLC veteran who is currently studying political science and economics at Carleton College in the United States.
Jianxiong won several NHSDLC regional championships, and was ranked #1 on the National Rankings from May 2014 to August 2014. After high school, Jianxiong worked as an Academic Assistant for the NHSDLC, and was a co-translator for the first edition of the official NHSDLC textbook, Speak Up.
Jianxiong helped establish debate clubs in six local schools in his hometown of Chongqing. As a coach in China, Jianxiong also taught at 11 debate camps. His students include the National Champions of 2015 and 2016, the Top Speaker of 2015, as well as many regional champions and top speakers.
Jace Gilmore is the content manager at the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. Jace currently holds a Masters from Missouri State University in International Relations along with a post-graduate certificate from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. Jace has been a research assistant and editor at the Arthur D. Simons Center for Interagency Cooperation and was a director at Sunrise International Education. Before making his way to Beijing, Jace also taught as an adjunct professor at Liaoning Normal University in Dalian, China.
After eight years of competitive policy debate, Jace qualified to the National Debate Tournament four times at university and had the chance to debate on a variety of different topics ranging from Middle East policy to alternative energy.
Chinese governmental policy
Valeryia has been involved in competitive debating and debate coaching for around 8 years. Competitively, Valeryia's achievements include becoming the champion of Beijing Women's Debate Challenge 2018; grand-finalist of Lviv Open 2017, Beijing Debate Open 2015 & DAPDI 2015; and semi-finalist of McKinsey Debate Cup 2016. Valeryia has also won numerous speaking awards and has been invited to judge and CA various BP tournaments in China. Valeryia has previously coached at NHSDLC winter camp and for the past year, she has been working as a debate coach and debate program developer. Her students achieved outstanding results reaching Semi-final at the biggest Asian Parliamentary youth debating competition in South Korea - YTN-HUFS. Valeryia has a Bachelor's degree in simultaneous interpretation from Minsk State Linguistic University and a Master's degree in China Studies from the Yenching Academy of Peking University.

Alex has coached debate all over the world, including China. Her students include the first NHSDLC team to win both the Harvard and Stanford PF competition. Also, she has taught at many PF camps helping students prepare for competitions including the NHSDLC nationals.
Competitively Alex took part in British parliamentary and transitioned to US college Policy debate. She reached the elimination rounds of many competitions, including top speaker. Outside of debate, Alex helps set up debate leagues in new places including underserved communities in the UK and India.

Amber Wang debated for five years in Texas served as Lincoln Douglas Captain for three years at her school. Over her debate career, she has qualified for TFA state, UIL state, NSDA nationals, and the TOC. She has taught at multiple top debate camps including National Symposium for Debate, Texas Debate Collective, and National High School Debate League of China. She currently attends the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, where she is the Spring Tournament Director of the club Penn for Youth Debate. She has extensive experience coaching in both LD and PF and is excited to work with you!

Prince Hyeamang is a former lead tutor and director of business operations and finance at DebateDrills. Before his time at DebateDrills, he worked as an independent private coach and taught at several of the premier debate camps in the U.S. (Victory Briefs Institute, Premier Debate Institute, National Symposium for Debate, and The Debate Intensive) while attending American University where he graduated with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies: Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government. His students have made it to the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions, elimination rounds of the NSDA national tournament, qualified for the Texas and California state tournament, and accumulated a number of bids along the way. As a competitor, he qualified twice to the tournament of champions, finishing with a winning record his senior year (4-3). He has competed in Lincoln-Douglas and Congress but has coached exclusively in Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas. Prince has deferred his acceptance from UCLA School of Law and will be attending in the Fall of 2022.

David Wollins is the former President and Captain of the University of Denver Debate Union. In high school, he qualified and broke at Nationals twice. He got 3rd place at the Colorado State Championship and received multiple bids to the Tournament of Champions. In college, he attended two World Championship tournaments and traveled to three continents. He reached the finals at the Rocky Mountain Championship and the Western Championship. Since then, David has worked with the National High School Debate League of China and the Bergen County Debate Club, assisting students in grades 6th-12th to increase confidence, expertise, and understanding of public forum debate.
